You know the importance of getting and staying fit. You know that as a senior, your health rests on whether or not you get the exercise your body needs. You know that whether you are in superior shape or you are just getting started, there are exercises you can do that are fun and beneficial. However, what you may not know is where to go to keep it interesting.
It is not my age, it is my attitude, says 82 years young, Lillian Brownlee.
The senior population continues to grow. In the not too distant future, millions of baby boomers will retire. This aging of a large population has encouraged medical practitioners, geneticists and researchers to pay attention to aging and health. What the have found is heartening.
I hope it has been in all the newspapers and TV news shows.I hope you saw it on Oprah and heard it on the radio.
There is enough bad news in the typical newscast to depress a dozen optimistic souls. Just listen to the news to bring your energy down. It is a sad, frightening, depressing world out there if you trust the news media.
By now, as a senior in life, we may know that to INCREASE our overall fitness level, we will need to focus on several areas of fitness. Areas of our body that needs attention when it comes to our fitness. As we age, our body does take a little longer to repair itself, but moderate physical activity is good for people of all ages and of all ability levels.
In the morning, in that pleasant state, halfway between sleep and wake, I program my thoughts for the day. This will be a breakthrough, victorious day for me regarding my fitness plans.
What will I say to myself in the situations the day will bring? What will I re-enforce? What habits do I wish to correct or install? What and how will I eat? How will I stand, walk, sit at my desk?
How and when, how long, and with what focus, will I exercise? What will I say to myself while exercising or looking in the mirror? So many questions.
Let's look at how to practice fitness by ourselves, and be great company for ourselves.
When we exercise alone, we converse with ourselves. We have opinions which we take seriously. When we decide we should be happy we agree with ourselves and then we are happy. Unfortunately, we might decide we are getting nowhere with our fitness program and should quit, and we might agree again.
Have you ever noticed that when you exercise with some people it seems easy and fun, and when you exercise with others, it is not. For that matter doing almost anything with some people is fun and with others not. Some people are a pleasure. Some people are just difficult to be around.
Whether exercising or anything else, the company you keep encourages or discourages you.
Although you may love to exercise and are typically cheerful and energetic most of the time, it still makes sense to bring an iPod.
You can listen to lectures, to audiobooks, or music. You can study, and you can be inspired by music. There is so much educational material, literature and music, you will never want for variety.
You could get a college education while exercising.
When you reach a certain age, you actually have gathered some wisdom. You know there is ample information and you know that although information is essential, it is not enough.
Being able to put what you know together into successful practice is more important.
This is especially important when it comes to staying or recovering your physical fitness.
Having a new baby can make dramatic changes in your life. After giving birth, a lot of women are anxious to get back to their original shape as quickly and painlessly as possible.
They get frustrated with the extra pounds they have gained during their pregnancy. The huge changes in life style are definitely worth it, but some of these changes make it hard to keep up with important things like regular exercise and adequate sleep.
