When dogs beg, they really know how to beg. They turn into Oscar-winning actors and turn on the sad face, the cute ears, and the pleading eyes. They might even go so far as to paw your chair or jump up onto the table. Regardless, begging isn't fun and both you and dinner guests, it can be very annoying.

There are ways to curb this habit, but the road to peaceful dining may not come easy.

How To Teach Your Dog To Stop Begging
When dogs beg, they really know how to beg. They turn into Oscar-winning actors and turn on the sad face, the cute ears, and the pleading eyes. They might even go so far as to paw your chair or jump up onto the table. Regardless, begging isn't fun and both you and dinner guests, it can be very annoying.

There are ways to curb this habit, but the road to peaceful dining may not come easy. After all, it's you who started this habit. That's right. You. Of course you didn't mean to let it get out of hand and offensive. But, the first time you slipped your adorable puppy a bit of table scraps taught him a lesson: if I beg, I will be rewarded with delicious human food. Surely you didn't mean to create a monster, but it only takes once to create bad behavior. Let's see how to fix it.

First, no more scraps. Maybe you give your dog food directly from the table, maybe you hand some down when preparing a meal, or maybe you let him lick the plate. Regardless, it has to stop and it has to stop all together. This means getting everyone in your house on board. Kids are great friends of the family dog. They love to give away undesirable food and toddlers may find it a hilarious game to feed the puppy. However, because one slip up can ruin all your hard work, this, too, must be eliminated.

If your dog is a table beggar, try giving him his own meal when you sit down to eat. And, give him this meal in another room. This works on several levels. First, it allows him to eat while you're eating. And, second, it keeps him away from the table. At first, you may hear some barks, whines, or howls. You must ignore these. The more times you repeat this, the sooner he'll learn. If this isn't possible, consider giving your dog a delicious treat during your dinner time. Give him something that takes some to eat. Nyla bones and Kong's are great for this purpose. They will take the attention away from your plate and put the focus on his treat.

Also, chose a word or command to associate with all of this. No begging is popular. Say it forcefully each and every time you get the sad eye performance. But, the best thing you can do to ensure begging stops forever is to stand strong. Remember, one moment of weakness erases all your hard work.
